It’s All About the Cloud

Posted on: December 23rd, 2010

question-cloudWith the hype that surrounds the “cloud” these days, practically everyone has heard about it; but what is the cloud, really? Why should you care?

Simply put, the cloud refers to cloud computing, a setup which allows technology users from all over the world to tap into the collective power of countless computers hooked up to each other. Instead of having the users having to download the necessary information onto their hard drives, the data is stored in servers, ready to be accessed at will. This is one big reason the global data center service industry has boomed in the recent years.

One can easily see the benefits that cloud computing offers.

  1. You can access data anywhere and anytime.
  2. The data is kept more secure
  3. Updates to software are not the user’s responsibility anymore
  4. The cost to the business/user is drastically reduced.

Still not clear about what the cloud is? Let’s take a look at some of the most popular services that people use today. Have you honed your microblogging skills by posting updates in 140 words or less? Twitter runs on the cloud. What e-mail platform do you use? Gmail perhaps? It also runs on the cloud. Then there is Facebook, perhaps the biggest thing to happen online in the recent years. Yes, it also runs on the cloud.

The next time you hear people talking about the cloud, you will at least have an idea what they are talking about. Whether you’re looking for solutions for personal or business purposes, the cloud will have something for you; and the way things are going, everyone’s going to rely on the cloud in the near future.

A New Look at Inflight Internet

Posted on: December 10th, 2010

Boeing Co.’s decision to pull out inflight internet service in 2006 paved the way for other airlines to reconsider their own installation of this upgrade. Analysts said that the failure of Boeing’s Connexion online service rests in the fact that it’s very costly to install and operate. Therefore, large expenses were already due before a single customer pays. Add to this the downturn in airline sales brought about by the terrorist attacks made in 2001.

Virgin Airlines, Jetblue Airways Corp., and AMR Corp.’s American Airline are now turning to air-to-ground connections in order to avoid the expensive satellite fees of Boeing.

Party Inside Apple Stores

t is already 2 o’clock in the morning but it looks like mid-afternoon. One day before Christmas, a good number of parents, tourists and New Yorkers are all gathered inside the Apple store in Midtown Manhattan clicking through iPods, surfing the net on Macbooks, and touching the screens of iPhones.

Throughout the night, the staff was kept busy attending to customers and ringing up the orders. The party in this store, as well as in the other 203 Apple stores in the entire world is a glaring reason why the company’s stock has risen up to 135% for the year.

The twenty-first century is a pivotal moment in mankind’s history. With the arrival of a complex and diverse abundance of information called the internet, digital information has become more important than other material things. For example, now electronic banking is more favored than cash banking, chat is more preferred rather than phone calls, and e-mail is viewed better than a handwritten note.
More interestingly, there is a website now that is devoted to predicting future possibilities of copying one’s mind into an artificial brain. “The Mind Uploading Webpage” details various questions and issues that have risen from this concept which includes artificial realities, brain enhancements and personal identities.

NEW YORK (AP) — Airlines and service providers seeking to deliver high-speed Internet services to passengers say they’ve learned from Boeing Co.’s 2006 decision to pull the plug on its ambitions to outfit its planes with a similar service.

Analysts say Boeing’s failed Connexion online service was costly to install and operate, resulting in large expenditures before getting a single paying customer. An industrywide downturn triggered by the 2001 terrorist attacks made the system an even tougher sell to struggling airlines.

Bing – Microsoft’s Own Browser

Posted on: July 2nd, 2009

Bing was released sometime ago and Microsoft advertised the search engine with the tag line, “Your search has been found!” Is it really as good as they say it is? Well opinions vary for the world is still a Google world with most of the searches done on their huge data centers that has bots or search engine indexers scanning the internet at regular intervals to keep track of new additions to the internet. Bing may have some advanced search bot that does things faster to give credence to their claims. Read the rest of this entry »

IBM and Microsoft Joins the Cloud

Posted on: June 2nd, 2009

With every industry leader developing their own version of the cloud, it will only be time when they all agree on their differences and the web begins transition into the web in the clouds where they say it will be simpler and easier to maintain. The concept of cloud computing is actually a mere revision of the old computer network setup then known as the server-client topography. The only difference is that the web is now dynamic with most of the action happening in split seconds out of sight. Doing a mere search takes a few milliseconds but the tasks that have to happen for a search to be successful is simply too complex to fathom should it be laid out and written down. Firefox Goes 3.5

Posted on: May 2nd, 2009

The much loved web browser that has taken the web monopoly out of the much used Internet Explorer has turned version 3.5 when release candidates have been released even as their version 3.0.11 was for distribution. The newest installment is overall way better than the previous ones but they are having to face another problem and it isn’t IE yet, it’s other open-sourced browsers that have made their entry into the web. From Google’s Chrome, Apple’s Safari and of course Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, they are sharing the web they used to own over IE and they are feeling it. The improvements they have included with the latest release is being received well but time will tell if it will retain it’s grip on most of the web browsing crowd. Read the rest of this entry »
